CAVEAT: I am producing a show in the same venue that is technically in competition with this one for an additional performance (though I do not view mine as a serious contender).
SHOW TITLE: Underneath the Lintel
HAILING FROM: Minneapolis, Minnesota
SHOW DESCRIPTION: “Best Solo Show” 2012 Minnesota & London Fringes “Best of Fest” Orlando; Capital (D.C.); Indianapolis; St Louis; Dallas Fringes “MUST SEE! O’Brien delivers a “wow” inducing performance.” St. Paul Pioneer Press
WHAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST: This is a show that’s shown up several times in many of the cities that I’ve toured to, yet I’ve somehow never managed to catch it.
INTERVIEWEE: Pat O’Brien (performer)
Just who do you think you are, anyway?
Quirky veteran stage, film, and TV actor. (If you’re under 40, was Mr. Dewey in Saved by the Bell). Small town boy from Eau Claire. Father of four; husband of one. Moved back to the Cities eight years ago after 22 years in LA.
So what’s the big idea?
The poorly titled but brilliantly written: “Underneath the Lintel” by Glen Berger. A solo show about a reclusive, obsessive-compulsive librarian who comes across a 123 years overdue book left in the overnight slot. Clues written in the book set him off on a worldwide quest to track down the borrower.
How did you come up with a screwy idea like that?
I auditioned for it about ten years ago in L.A.; didn’t get the part, but desperately wanted to do it. So when I returned to the Cities, I self-produced it and have been touring it on & off for the last six years.
Why should I care?
Because it’s really fucking good. Lots of awards on the U.S. and Canadian Fringe circuit, 5 star & rave reviews from major newspapers, standing O’s, and sold out houses. Google it. patobrientheatrics.com
Justify your show’s existence in haiku form.
I have never haiku-ed
but maybe I’ll start
when I’m damn good and ready.
